Wood Veneer or Laminate Office Furniture?

Are you getting ready to refurnish an office? Or maybe you’re ready to upgrade your office furnishings? At Desks, Incorporated in Denver, CO, many of our clients ask about the difference between laminate office furniture and veneer office furniture. We’ve been helping office managers, project managers, CEOs and architects choose office furnishings since 1956—we’ve literally designed and furnished thousands of offices throughout Colorado, so we’re happy to provide information like this.

Wood Veneer Office Furniture

Veneer is a thin layer of real hardwood that’s applied to a less expensive material like plywood. It has a real wood finish with natural variations and comes with richer, stained finish options. It’s softer and more susceptible to scratches and dents, so requires coasters and desk pads to protect its finish. Because it takes more effort to create veneer furniture, it’s usually priced higher than laminate alternatives.

Laminate Office Furniture

Laminate is a man-made product. It has a printed surface that’s made to look like real wood. However, it’s usually made of plastic and bonded to a composite base. It’s stronger than veneer and tends to be heat and scratch resistant. It’s also easier to care for than veneer or real wood office furniture. It’s easier to produce as well, which makes it more economical and budget-friendly. Here’s the downside: because it’s a manufactured surface, it doesn’t have the natural variations and true wood grains that you get with real wood or real wood veneer. The good news is, you can get laminates in virtually any color.
