How To Create A Calmer Workplace in 2021

It’s probably no surprise to learn that 71% of Americans consider their workspace to be a “significant source of stress.” And since most Americans spend 40 hours a week or more at work, this can result in a high level of stress and can have a negative impact on the quality of work. So what can be done about it?

Tip #1: Make your space work for you

Sounds simple, right? But sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones. Take a minute and think about what kind of environment you need to do your best work. Does an uncluttered workspace help you get more work done? Does a noisy space make it difficult to concentrate? Think about what would create a calm and productive workspace and then try to achieve that. Maybe you need a few things to help you get more organized or you might need a storage space so it’s easier to have an uncluttered workspace. You may even need to talk to your employer about adding a privacy screen, getting a more comfortable chair or repainting or re-carpeting your office area.

Tip #2: How to make a home office work for you

If you’re like many Americans, you’re working from home more or even full time. Just like a corporate office, you need to make your home workspace a place that’s more conducive to productivity and positivity. Whether you have an actual home office or have to work in a kitchen nook or even a bedroom, it’s important to eliminate distractions, de-clutter and have what you need.

Is it too noisy in your work area? Try putting up a privacy screen or even wearing noise-cancelling headphones. Try to have a space with natural light, because that is an actual mood lifter. And invest in a desk and office chair that are comfortable and “fit” YOU. Having furniture that’s comfortable and appropriate for your work tasks will do a lot to eliminate stress. Plus, an uncomfortable chair or desk that doesn’t fit you can create aches and pain and even result in long-term health issues.

Tip #3: Create tranquility.

Do you have noisy roommates, co-workers or neighbors? Studies show that distractions negatively impact productivity, performance and potential. Take the time to talk to the people around you to see if they can help mitigate their noise levels. Or, try to move your office to a quieter location. Anything you can do to reduce distractions will help you achieve a workspace that is calmer and more conducive to productivity.

Tip #4: Talk to an expert.
